Friday, July 2nd was Opening Day for the Heron Park Wading Pool. The pool will stay open (with extended hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays) until Friday, August 27th. Funded and staffed by the City of Ottawa, this year’s pool staff are:

Pool Maintenance at Heron Park Wading Pool

There will be a variety of programs, activities and events for everyone to enjoy. Some of the highlights of the 2010 season are:

• Occasional BBQs (hotdogs and beverages for a nominal fee)
• July 19th SPECIAL EVENT (theme to be decided)

From its headwaters along Lester Road, Sawmill Creek flows north through the community of South Keys and along the heavily-urbanized Bank Street before joining the Rideau River at Billings Bridge.   As an urban watershed, a lot of garbage tends to collect along the banks and in the stream itself which can harm the important fish and wildlife habitat along the creek.

We will meet at Heron Park and focus on different areas of the creek.   Heron Park is located on Heron Road, east of the Airport Parkway and west of Bank Street.  From Heron Road, turn north onto Clover Street. The community centre and park is on the left side of the street.  We will park and meet there at 9 am.

We encourage you to bring drinking water and sun block.  We will provide as many pairs of chest waders as we can, but please wear rubber boots or sturdy footwear.  The Sawmill Creek Cleanup runs from 9 am to 12 pm.

Residents are reminded that only household waste will be accepted (maximum 100 litres) at the depot. No commercial waste accepted. For a complete listing of acceptable household hazardous waste, visit the City’s website at ottawa.ca/hhw.

• Waste oil can be brought back to a “Take it Back!” Partner retailer; check the City’s Web site at ottawa.ca under Recycling and Garbage for a list of 100 retailers that take back oil.

Non-Renewable Community Project Funding is available for projects that:

• Increase neighbourhood capacity to enact positive and sustainable change in planning, service delivery, improve health and/or improve safety in accordance with neighbourhood-defined goals.
• Promote the healthy development of children and youth (0-18 years) and their development of competencies through recreation, leisure, cultural and arts activities.
• Increase participation of seniors in physical activities and community life to promote successful aging.
• Support inclusion of people who are low income, at risk, isolated or otherwise marginalized and promote quality of life for the full diversity of residents through activities such as literacy, employment, physical activity and/or participation in cultural programs.
• Promote conditions of equality on the basis of race, ethnicity, income, gender, official language and ability.

Our initial vision is to lay out 10 or so individual garden plots, as well as have a children’s garden and a high raised bed for seniors and others who may have trouble kneeling down. We’ve scouted out a few possible vacant public lands, but there are various approvals and tests that need to happen before we know for sure where the site will be. We’ll also talk to the neighbours in the immediate vicinity to identify and address their concerns, and will hold a public meeting to answer questions…and to recruit gardeners and volunteers!

A resident of Heron Park saw one a week ago near Sawmill Creek, west of Rockingham Ave. This isn’t a reason to panic, but it is a reason to be careful. The creatures most in danger are small animals (cats, small dogs, and of course rabbits and other wildlife).
